Replacing an outdated control valve with modern technology without modifying the existing pipework? That is exactly what our team achieved at a refinery in the Rotterdam port area. Thanks to a smart replacement solution, technical expertise and in-house stock, a decades-old control valve was replaced in less than one week.
The challenge: a failing control valve
We were contacted about a failing control valve dating back to the 1970s or 1980s. The initial request was to repair the existing valve on-site and overhaul the actuator.
However, upon closer inspection, this did not necessarily prove to be the best solution. Due to the valve's age, spare parts were becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. While a repair might have resolved the immediate issue, it would not provide sufficient assurance for future maintenance.
The decision: overhaul or replace?
Our specialists therefore evaluated several options, ranging from an overhaul to a complete replacement. Ultimately, replacing the existing valve with a Masoneilan Camflex GR proved to be the most future-proof solution.
GR stands for Globe Replacement: replacing a traditional linear globe valve with a more compact rotary control valve. The Camflex GR can be installed as a drop-in replacement, allowing the existing pipework and process configuration to remain largely unchanged.
Furthermore, the eccentric rotary plug design reduces friction and wear compared to traditional linear valve movement. Combined with fewer moving parts and potential leak paths, this contributes to a longer service life, easier maintenance and improved operational reliability.
The solution: modified from stock and installed within three days
Speed was also essential for this project. A Camflex valve available from our stock in Maasdijk was therefore modified to meet the customer's specific requirements and the existing installation.
Our own field service engineers then managed the entire process. Within three days, the existing valve was removed, the necessary modifications were carried out and the new Camflex GR was installed.
Less than one week passed between the initial enquiry and the installation of a completely new control valve.
The result: a long-term solution
The refinery now benefits from a modern, compact control valve while retaining the existing pipework. The outdated technology has been replaced without extensive modifications to the installation.
In addition, service support and spare parts are readily available, making future maintenance easier to manage and plan.
This case demonstrates that modernisation does not always require extensive modifications to an existing installation. With the right technical expertise and a suitable replacement solution, existing equipment can be upgraded with minimal impact on the surrounding installation.
As an independent process partner, Van der Ende Valve Services looks beyond the initial maintenance request. Whether an overhaul or replacement is the best option depends on the technical condition of the equipment and the customer's long-term interests.
