Van der Ende Valve Services achieves ISO 14001 certification: sustainable maintenance for the future

At Van der Ende Valve Services, we believe in providing reliable, efficient solutions for the process industry – while also doing our part for a sustainable and safe future. That’s why we’re proud to have achieved ISO 14001 certification.
This internationally recognized standard confirms our commitment to environmentally responsible operations and sustainable maintenance practices.

Why ISO 14001?

When we built our facility in 2009, we laid the foundation for sustainability with energy-efficient choices. But we wanted to go further – for our clients and for the planet. With growing demand for sustainable practices from both customers and legislation, ISO 14001 now provides us with a structured environmental management system that helps reduce energy consumption and supports the selection of eco-friendly products.

Carl Wierks, our Managing Director, explains:
“Achieving ISO 14001 is more than just earning a certificate. It gives us a framework and clear direction to work more sustainably, systematically, and effectively.”

Sustainable Business in Practice

What does this certification mean for Van der Ende Valve Services? It’s about more than ticking boxes – it’s about real transformation. We’ve replaced environmentally harmful materials, such as solvent-based coatings, with water-based alternatives. We’ve also switched to eco-friendly cleaning agents and other materials that reduce our environmental impact.

Carl adds:
“ISO 14001 might sound simple, but for an SME, it’s a real investment. These steps, however, make a difference – not just for the direct results, but for the bigger picture.”

The Biggest Challenge: Legislation and Compliance

The path to ISO 14001 wasn’t easy. Carl notes:
“Environmental regulations are incredibly complex. Figuring out which rules apply was a major challenge, but thanks to the dedication of our team – especially our QHSE coordinator, Margot – we completed the process successfully.”

Now that we’ve implemented ISO 14001, we’re better equipped to monitor our environmental impact, meet legal requirements, and continuously improve our operations. The certification provides us with structure in a sector that is moving rapidly toward greater sustainability.

What This Means for Our Clients

With ISO 14001 certification, we can now officially confirm that our processes are not only reliable and safe, but also sustainable. Our focus on environmentally friendly maintenance helps clients optimize their operations, reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. In doing so, we actively support their sustainability goals and contribute to a greener future for the process industry.

Looking Ahead

While we’re proud to have earned ISO 14001 certification, we see it as a starting point – not a finish line. We’re already exploring the next steps, such as battery storage for solar energy and further digitization of our systems to eliminate paper usage.

Carl concludes:
“Standing still is falling behind. We will continue to implement improvements that help keep the future clean and livable for generations to come.”
